Prof. MATHIEU VINKEN, Ph.D., Pharm.D., E.R.T.
Mathieu Vinken (Belgian; born 1 February 1978) is senior full professor affiliated with the Vrije Universiteit Brussel-Belgium and visiting professor at the University of São Paulo-Brazil. He has a background in pharmaceutical sciences (Pharm.D.), holds a doctoral degree in experimental in vitro toxicology (Ph.D.) and is a European Registered Toxicologist (E.R.T.). He is past-president and honorary member of the European Society of Toxicology In Vitro.
His research focus is situated in the fields of experimental hepatology (connexin and pannexin channels as drug targets and biomarkers for the therapy and diagnosis of liver disease), in vitro toxicology (mechanistic modelling of liver toxicity as the basis for the development of liver-based in vitro systems) and space toxicology (adverse effects of pharmaceutical drugs in astronauts).
He is promoter of 12 completed PhD projects and 7 finalized postdoctoral projects. He is author of more than 250 publications in international peer-reviewed journals (h-index in Web of Science 48). He is editor of 3 books. He is editor-in-chief of Toxicology and NAM Journal, associate editor of Archives of Toxicology and Current Research in Toxicology as well as European editor of Applied In Vitro Toxicology. He is a regularly invited speaker on international conferences in the area of toxicology. He coordinates several (inter)national research projects and received a number of scientific awards.
